Let’s go back to October of 2014. It was a few days before Halloween when I got text from an unknown number that said “nice IG post”. My response was a polite “ha. Thank you. Who’s this?” A few texts and a couple days later I was getting ready for what would be my last, first date. We planned to meet at Sapphire in Laguna Beach at 7pm. As I was getting ready I didn’t feel nervous. I mean I had been single for 5 years and been on a few first dates… In my mind I was meeting a really handsome man who was younger than me, recently divorced and probably wasn’t interested in something long term with a mom of three.
I am always on time. Actually, I’m always early. As I was parking, Jeff texted me to let me know he was on his way, but a crane had fallen on the 5 freeway! At first, I thought it was an excuse but then he called and explained how sorry he was and that he would be there as soon as he could. Poor Jeff, I could sense his stress through the phone. All the anticipation was starting to get to me. I probably used the restroom at least 4 times while waiting. Teeth check, nose check, hair check, brow check, apply another 3 layers of gloss..you get it.
I was sitting on a bench outside of the restaurant when Jeff came around the corner and up the steps to greet me. He was and is the most handsome man I have ever met. I can still see his facial expression as we saw each other for the first time. I love that memory.
We were seated outside on the patio. I ordered a heirloom tomato salad and water ( I still don’t know how I managed an entire meal without diet Coke) and Jeff ordered fish. The conversation just flowed. We talked about everything from both being from Arizona, previous relationships, religion, and family. He was really nice and sweet and seemed somewhat nervous. I kind of liked that. His nerves seemed to calm mine. As we went in to say goodbye Jeff almost knocked me over. His hug was so strong and I was wearing platforms. Thankfully I stayed on both feet and I walked away hoping I’d hear from him again. I did, like an hour later…
ps..someone asked how he got my number. We have a mutual friend, Chelsey. She gave Jeff my number about 3 months before he actually contacted me. He was already following me on Instagram, but I was unaware of who he was. He said he wanted to wait to message me until it felt right. I was driving home from Disneyland with my girls when the text came through.
