2019 New Year Intentions

Happy New Year! 2018 was a year of growth, new experiences, family, home and a lot of gratitude. Last year I wrote about my New Year Intentions for 2018 and have to say, not a lot has changed. My goal from last year and for over a decade now has been to live a life I’m proud of.

I am proud of the life I live. I have so much to be grateful for. There is also so much I’d like to improve and work on. One of the many things I struggle with is balance. The balance between family, work, and my personal goals.

My dad is a really great example of balance. Growing up my dad worked 9-5 in his Dermatology practice. He was also the head of our area church for over 18 years. This service calling took up any and all of his free time, yet my dad managed to make all 4 of his kids and my mom feel special every single day. My dad woke up early, made lunches, drove us to school. He never missed one of my tennis matches or track meets. Even if he could only stay for 10 mins, he came to support me. When he got home after 10pm, I was often still at the kitchen table waiting for him to help me with math. He never lost his patience with me. Sometimes he just finished my homework for me so he could go to bed (that was part of my plan;))

The older my kids get, the more I admire my parents for the way they parented us with structure and love!

I’m in Arizona right now and last night I sat with my dad asking him how he managed to do it all and do it really well. First, he said he made the choice when my siblings and I were little that he would put his family before anything else, despite his demanding career and church service. He also said he prayed, a lot. He admitted it wasn’t easy to be present in all aspects of his life and says he had several failures he’s glad I can’t remember, haha. He’s right, I don’t remember. Ultimately his advice was the same advice he’s given me throughout my life: stay close to the Lord, do your best and serve your family.

Last week on story I asked what you’d like to see more of in 2019
